About Jim Henderson

Many people have asked me, “from where does your inspiration come?” I would have to say without a doubt, that being born in the deep South, Jackson, MS, and spending many summers and holidays with my grandparents in Inverness, MS, gave me unlimited resources and remembrances of home and countryside. The many organic shapes of nature found in southern landscapes led me to an interest in painting them. My art has been described as expressionistic and has been influenced by artists like Van Gogh, Freida Hamm and others that use stylized shapes. I have adopted a line and ink approach that blends large colorful shapes with heavy ink lines and marks. Trees, barns, old houses, and country roads take on my impression of their shape and style. My goal is to evoke in the viewer a remembrance of old familiar places. Early in life, I had an interest in art. In third grade, I thought it would be great to illustrate children's books. However, life changes young dreams. After graduation from the University of Mississippi and a 45 -year career in accounting, I returned to my avocation - art! I began by taking a drawing class and continued with pastels and acrylics. My interest grew after taking additional lessons and workshops in oil. After admiring watercolor paintings by the wonderful artists in Fred Rawlinson’s Jackson critique class, I desired to learn the art of watercolor. Many classes later, with Fred as my teacher, watercolor became my preferred medium. My wife and I now live in Somerville, TN. I am a member of Memphis/Germantown Art League, Tennessee Watercolor Society, and the Watercolor Society of Alabama. I enjoy participating in and supporting local art exhibitions in West Tennessee and national shows in the surrounding states.
